Description – Autumn is a good time to photographs birds that collect and hide food like the eurasian jay. It’s a noisy and very shy bird that you can find in all kind of forests. It’s particular fond of acorns and potatoes. In the northern parts of Sweden where I grew up it’s a very unpopular bird because it gathers food from bird feeders and steals potatoes from the potato fields. Personally, I like the jay. It’s an intelligent and a colourful bird that is easy to identify thanks to the bright blue wing patch.
I came up with the idea for the picture when I saw the beautiful colours of the rowan tree beside my parents’ house when I was visiting them during autumn. I positioned myself by a window on the top floor of the house and lured the jay to the tree with some nuts. The jay is photographed from above were the lawn created the yellow background colour. It took a few attempts before I was able to capture it in this position.
